Eamon Tierney – An Appreciation

The recent passing of our dear colleague Eamon has cast a pall of sadness and immeasurable sense of loss over our club.

No member has exemplified the Rotary motto of Service Above Self than Eamon. He was at the heart of so many important projects.  None more so that the Polio Plus Campaign where he acted as District Lead.  His professional experience as Consultant Anaesthetist and his work in Africa,  the Middle East and India made him uniquely qualified for this project.

But his unrivalled  commitment was  not solely confined to Club aims and objectives but extended deep into the community in which we all live and serve:

  • He was a Board Member of Wexford Festival Opera.
  • Acted as a guide at Johnstown Castle and Selskar Abbey
  • And,  together with his dear wife Niamh performed the duties of volunteer drivers for South East  Radiotherapy Trust  where for over fourteen years ensured that cancer patients throughout the South East were provided with a free and confidential transport service.

On a personal level Eamon was an intellectual giant, with an encyclopedic knowledge of current and international affairs.  Extremely well read, he could grace any company, and enlighten any debate. As those of us who were fortunate enough to share his table at Rotary lunches will attest.

His wit, wisdom, quotes, and anecdotes were a joy to listen to. Eamon was a unique individual who exuded goodness and warmth towards everyone who had the good fortune to have known him. He left an indelible mark on our Club and left a void that will be impossible to fill. This was acknowledged when he was awarded Honorary membership in recognition of his remarkable contribution to Rotary.

We will all greatly miss him greatly.

Ni beidh a Leithead ann aris.

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to his dear wife, Niamh, children Ciara, Conor and Daire.
