From Poetry to Fundraising: Loretto Interact Club’s Remarkable Year

The Loretto Interact Club, guided by the enthusiastic leadership of President Lucy Lawlor and Vice President Aoife Byrne, has concluded another successful year of meaningful community engagement and impactful fundraising. Supported by their dedicated teacher Ms Rebecca Frayne, the club presented an inspiring overview of their year’s activities to the Rotary Club during their luncheon on Monday, May 12th.

Interact Clubs are renowned for their commitment to fostering leadership and community spirit among young people, and the Loretto Interact Club exemplifies these ideals remarkably. Throughout the year, the club members embraced two major projects, each chosen for its profound impact locally and globally.

Their national project, aimed at supporting the Irish Cancer Society, successfully raised €296.30. The members’ dedication to this cause underscores their commitment to making a tangible difference within Ireland, offering both financial support and heightened awareness around cancer care and prevention.

On an international level, the students enthusiastically took part in Rotary International’s EndPolioNow initiative, successfully raising €361.70. This project highlights their recognition of Rotary’s longstanding mission to eradicate polio worldwide. Their effort not only contributes financially to the cause but also demonstrates a valuable lesson in global citizenship and solidarity.

One memorable highlight of the luncheon was a moving poetry recitation by Aoife Byrne, who composed an original poem titled “Crocus,” especially for World Polio Day. Her performance deeply resonated with attendees, encapsulating the emotional and humanitarian essence of the global polio eradication effort.

Reflecting on her experience, Lucy Lawlor shared, “It has been a wonderful experience getting to be a part of something like this, and getting to really make a difference in your community because Wexford is such a community-based place, and it is my favourite thing about the county, and it will always be.” Her words capture the spirit of community engagement that the Loretto Interact Club fosters, reinforcing the importance of local involvement as a foundation for broader social impact.

Rotarian Christine Doyle provided steadfast guidance throughout the year, whose encouragement and support have been invaluable to the club’s achievements. Her mentorship underscores the importance of experienced community members empowering younger generations and nurturing future leaders who understand the importance of service above self.

The Loretto Interact Club’s commitment and passion exemplify Rotary’s core values of community service, leadership, and international cooperation. Through their projects, fundraising activities, and expressive creativity, these students have shown that even small groups can significantly impact local and global communities. Their dedication promises a future where young people continue to lead with compassion and responsibility, positively shaping the world around them.
